Windows Home Server

Over the last few weeks I have been working with Marcel Nouwens', the developer of the WHS uTorrent Add-In, to update my guide to installing uTorrent as a service on WHS. The updated guide incorporates the use of a a nice little tool created by Marcel called AnyServiceInstaller, that simplifies the creation of the Windows Service, and a simple guide to installing the uTorrent Add-In as an extra option for controlling uTorrent.

One of the features of Windows Home Server (WHS) that was introduced in the Consumer Technology Preview (CTP) is Add-Ins, WHS specific applications that run via the WHS Console. Unfortunately due to the many issues with the CTP build that I experienced I didn't really get a chance to look into the Add-Ins, but now that the Release Candidate (RC) is out I've made sure to have a play.

So far I have had a quick look at two of the Add-Ins, the two that I could see myself using; Whiist and an unofficial uTorrent Add-In.

The Windows Home Server (WHS) Release Candidate (RC) is available for download as of this morning. I started the download this morning before leaving for work and expect it to be finished well before I get home tonight.

I got an email from Microsoft this morning with an update on Windows Home Server (WHS) and the upcoming 'Release Candidate (RC)'.

The email on really really touched on the upgrade process, being that due to the changes from WHS CTP and additional features (?) you will not be able to do an upgrade of the server the way that you could from WHS Beta 2 to WHS CTP, you will have to do a clean install which means you will have to copy all data that is not stored anywhere other than your WHS off the machine to a safe place then transfer it back after the upgrade.

One of the first things I did after completing my Windows Home Server (WHS) Beta 2 installation was look into ways to make it my complete always on computer solution; one of the major requirements was for it to run a BitTorrent client. I had always used my personal computer to download torrents overnight, but as the point of installing a WHS machine was to enable all other computers to be off overnight the WHS machine had to take over this job.

I got a nice surprise when I checked my email, it looks like the Windows Home Server Team have released the latest version; Windows Home Server CTP.

I've been using Windows Home Server (WHS) Beta 2 for a few months now and I can definitely say that it is up there with Windows Media Center Edition as one the top OS variants from Microsoft.
