Textimage

It's been a while since I've put together a guide on the usage of Textimage, but with version 2.2 right around the corner it seems like the time is right, plus it makes for a great way to test a module.

In this guide I will show you how to use Textimage for your primary links menu.

I recently started looking into ways of improving the UI of my modules, Textimage specifically, and I came across the jQuery UI module. While I had previously been aware of the module, I never actually got around to looking into it.

After a bit of playing around with it, including the submission of a patch to hopefully make it easier for end users to install, I decided it was definitely a viable solution and I then proceeded to implement it.

Hot on the heels of the 2.1 release, Textimage gets some more lovin'.

One thing that I found myself doing quite often while working with Textimage is creating a preset, saving the preset, testing the preset, editing the preset, saving the preset, testing the preset, etc.
I'm happy to say that that process is now a thing of the past due to the newly added Textimage Preview functionality.

It's been a long time coming, probably for me more than anyone, but Textimage 2.1 has finally been released for both Drupal 5 and 6.

While this latest version is primarily a bug fix release, it does introduce some new features, including the following:

  • Ported to Drupal 6.
  • Support for OpenType fonts.
  • CCK and Views integration - Display email and textfields using a Textimage preset.
  • theme() functionality added - Create Textimages directly from your module or theme.

One of the nicer effects I used on TheSkinDrop.com, a gallery site of a sort, was the mouseover labels on the thumbnails. While this wasn't achieved using Textimage, it should have been, and likely will be when I have the time to perform an upgrade.

Here I will demonstrate how to achieve that effect using Textimage, firstly on a standalone item, then integrated with a Views grid display.
