Drag'n'Drop Uploads: Firefox 3.6, Google Gears & CCK Formatters

As mentioned the other day (Module updates galore), I have recently released my Drag'n'Drop Uploads module, allowing users to Drag files from their local filesystem, Drop them into Drupal and have them auto-magically uploaded and referenced in the desired node textarea (Body, etc) using nothing but JavaScript/jQuery.

Well, in the short time since that initial release there has been three significant updates:

  • Mozilla Firefox 3.6 support
Utilizing the new File API in Firefox 3.6, Drag'n'Drop Uploads can now provide true Drag and Drop functionality without any of the tricks I had to resort to for Safari/Chrome, allowing for some fantastic future functionality such as Multiple uploads.
  • Google Gears support
While not something I originally wished to resort to, the (optional) use of Google Gears allows for Drag'n'Drop Uploads to be used with any Google Gears supported browser, which means pre-Firefox 3.6 and Internet Explorer.

Luckily, the Google Gears functionality is practically identical as that of the native Firefox 3.6 which means Google Gears will also allow for Multiple uploads when I add this functionality.

  • CCK/Field Formatters
CCK/Field Formatters support adds the ability to use modules such as ImageCache or Lightbox2 to theme the HTML file reference inserted in the selected textarea as needed, allowing for simple Drag'n'Drop lightboxes and much more.

So that now leaves just one notable browser out of the support list; Opera. Hopefully this will be ratified in the near future.

I expect to have 1.0 release for the Drupal 6 version shortly pending a bit more testing and eradication of any outstanding issues.

To get the latest development releases to test this great module for yourself, head over to the Drag'n'Drop Uploads project page.

This will be awesome - when those browser versions get adopted - but still.. awesome.

Hi PieterDC,

While yes, Firefox 3.6 is still in beta, Safari and Google Chrome support has been around for some time now (although, they still aren't Firefox). However, you can opt for the Google Gears add-in option and get majority browser support (Firefox 3.x, Internet Explorer). But you are right, full native browser support would be great.

Cheers,
