HOWTO: Fix WiFi dropouts on the Nokia N95.

From the minute I read up about the Nokia N95 to the minute I got the phone WiFi was definitely one of the most anticipated features for myself. Unfortunately for myself, and some others, I experienced constant WiFi dropouts.

Yesterday while checking the N95 discussion on the Whirlpool Forums I came across a solution which thankfully solved my problem. All you need to do is turn of the WiFi Powersave feature on your phone, to do so do the following:

  1. Open the phones 'Settings' application.

    1. Open settings

  2. Select 'Connection' from the menu.

    WiFiPS02

  3. Scroll down to 'Wireless LAN' and select it.

    3. Wireless LAN

  4. Hit the options button (left soft key) and select 'Advanced Settings'.

    4. Advanced Settings

  5. When the following warning screen appears select Yes to enter the Advanced Settings screen.

    5. Warning screen

  6. Click 'Automatic configuration' to set it to Disabled.

    6. Automatic configuration

  7. Scroll down to the 'Power saving' option in the menu and set it to Disabled.

    7. Power saving 7. Power saving

You should now be able to use the WiFi features of your Nokia N95 without any annoying dropouts.

The downside to this is that with the Power saving feature disabled the WiFi will consume more power and drain the battery with intensive use, but considering the option it is definitely an improvement.

hy to everyone..i have nokia n-95...somebody told me that we can“t use the wi-fi..because we do need an extra software!! do we? or the phone come allready with this funcion..and how this works?? thank you.. RIESGO..

Hi Riesgo,

You do not need any extra software to access the WiFi on the Nokia N95, whoever told you that has either misheard or been mislead. To find more information on how to use the WiFi features I would suggest refering to the manual, if you do not have a copy visit the Nokia Support site.

Hi Riesgo,

Either refer to your Wireless router manual, your laptop manual or ring Sony technical support.

Hi Sonu Chhabra,

From my experience this is a fairly generic error, I myself was getting this error at my workplace as I had the incorrect WEP Key. Make certain that all you details are entered correctly, make certain the wireless router is correctly connected to the network/internet and that your internet connection is active.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I am trying to connect my N95 to a non-broadcasting wireless connection. However I cannot find any place to enter the connection SSID directly. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Bill,

Under Settings > Connection > Access points, select Options then New access point and you should be able to fill out all details manually.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Worked great. I dont know why they didn't set the phone up like this in the first place. Great post

Hi David,

I'm glad this worked for you, it definitely improved my own N95 usage.
However the reason Nokia has the power save feature set on as default is simply to save you power; theoretically you should be able to browse perfectly with the power save feature enabled but unfortunately not all Wireless routers play nice with the feature.

Decipher.

Hello,

I can use browsing on my N95 using the wi-fi in a friends house.
Well, the thing is that in my house the automatic settings of windows
for IP and DNS do not work... so my internet provider has
advised to add them manually at the TCP/IP settings on
the wireless network and it works on my PC... but the N95 cannot
connect to the internet..

Any suggestions?

Hi

I am having a new wifi problem after updating my firmware to the latest 21 ver. The N95 seems unable to find the wifi network beyond a very small range, I have a whole lot devices working at a larger range but the N95 wifi working range seems to have shrunk, any ideas on rectifying this. This has started only after updating the firmware.

Cheers
