microBlogging - Fad or Future?
microBlogging seems to be getting a lot of hype; the most hyped microBlog being Twitter.com.
So what is microBlogging, you ask? The best analogy I have seen is by a Microsoft blogger (Omar Shahine?):
Email is to Instant Messaging as Blogging is to Twitter
However I would replace the word "Twitter" with "microBlogging" as Twitter is only a service, not a standard. Basically its a SMS style blog, 140 characters updating strangers/friends/followers of anything you wish.
After finally succumbing to the hype I decided to check out Twitter for myself and after using it for a few days I can definitely say that the one thing it does done right is that like an IM, and unlike a Blog Post/Email, you do not have to put too much thought or time into a post. It's quick and easy, and I can definitely see a place for it.
Twitter may be the first big thing for microBlogging but as all new trends begin to grow the attract competition. Today I signed up to Jaiku.com which is another microBlogging service and from the short amount of time using it I believe that it will soon overtake Twitter. Jaiku has built in features that will automatically add your normal Blog Posts, Photo Blogs, etc, as a microBlog post. It is just an upgrade to the Twitter concept, but it is done well. But with that said there is bound to be another service that will overtake Jaiku.
The real question is will microBlogging stick? I feel dirty saying "Only time will tell"... so I won't say it.
